In Indonesia, ITAS and KITAS are two terms frequently encountered when discussing residency permits for foreigners. While they both refer to temporary stay permits, understanding the distinction between the two is essential for anyone planning to stay in Indonesia.
What is ITAS?
ITAS stands for Izin Tinggal Terbatas which translates to “Limited Stay Permit”. It is the official authorization granted to foreigners allowing them to reside in Indonesia for a specified period.
In the past, ITAS was also known as KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas), where the “K” stood for “Kartu” meaning card. However, with the digitalization of Indonesian immigration services, the physical card is no longer issued, and the term “KITAS” has largely been phased out in favor of the simpler “ITAS”.
What is KITAS?
While officially no longer used, KITAS, or Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas, refers to the physical card that used to be issued to foreigners along with their ITAS. Essentially, it was the physical manifestation of the limited stay permit. Today, the ITAS is issued electronically and is simply referred to as “e-ITAS” or just “ITAS.”
Key Differences
In essence, there is no actual difference between ITAS and KITAS. The only distinction is that KITAS referred to the physical card embodying the permit, while ITAS refers to the permit itself, whether in physical or electronic form.
How to Apply for ITAS
The process for applying for an ITAS (previously KITAS) can vary depending on the type of visa and the applicant’s individual circumstances. However, the general process involves:
- Sponsorship: In most cases, you will need a sponsor, which could be an Indonesian company or individual.
- Visa Application: The sponsor will usually handle the initial visa application on your behalf.
- Documents: You will be required to submit a range of documents, including your passport, visa application form, photographs, and other supporting documents depending on your visa type.
- Application to Immigration: Once you arrive in Indonesia on the appropriate visa, you and your sponsor will need to apply for the ITAS at the local immigration office.
- Approval: If your application is approved, you will receive your ITAS.
- Types of ITAS
There are various types of ITAS, including:
- Working ITAS: For foreigners employed by an Indonesian company.
- Investor ITAS: For foreigners who have invested a certain amount in an Indonesian business.
- Retirement ITAS: For retired foreigners who meet specific age and financial requirements.
- Family ITAS: For spouses and dependents of ITAS holders.
It is crucial to note that each type of ITAS has different requirements and validity periods.
Understanding the terminology and the process involved in acquiring an ITAS is essential for anyone wishing to stay in Indonesia for an extended period. While the term KITAS is no longer officially used, the essence of it – a temporary stay permit – lives on in the ITAS.
Whether you are planning to work, invest, retire, or simply live in Indonesia with your family, obtaining the correct type of ITAS is the first step towards legally establishing your residence in this vibrant and diverse country.
